Adopt-a-Pet project collects massive donations for Hornell Humane Society

Recently one of the “Leader In Me Genius Hour” clubs called “Pet Warriors,” embarked on a service learning project.  With the guidance of Mrs. Suzie Askins and Mrs. Amy Caward the 20 student strong group developed an “Adopt-a-Pet” campaign.   The club members asked elementary classrooms to volunteer to collect items for an animal currently at the Hornell Area Humane Society.

Twenty two pre-K through 6th grade classes decided to take on the challenge.  Once classrooms volunteered, the Pet Warriors members created a collection bag (thanks to Canisteo Shure Fine) with a pet’s picture, name and a list of possible items to donate.  After 3 weeks of collection time, donations were turned in.  The generosity and participation were amazing!

CG Elementary students with donations for HAHS

Over 350 items went to the Hornell Area Humane Society and to Susan’s Cat Sanctuary of the Southern Tier!  There were donations of everything from dog beds and cat toys to leashes, office supplies and cleaning supplies.  To wrap up the project, Laura and Cricket from HAHS visited and taught about the Humane Society and all it does.  When Laura’s car was loaded, there was barely enough room for her and Cricket to fit in!

Great Job CG Elementary ~ you have shown great leadership beginning with the end in mind and synergizing to meet that goal!
