Major theft, fraud, DWI, and a Sheriff’s deputy was attacked

Grand Larceny and Scheme to Defraud Arrest

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on August 16, 2022, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested John E. Sabins, age 32, of SR 53, Bath, New York, following an investigation of a reported larceny by fraud in Wayland, New York. It is alleged that Mr. Sabins received funds in excess of $1,000 for purchases never delivered. Mr. Sabins was charged with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree and Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree, both class E Felonies. Mr. Sabins, a current inmate at the Steuben County Jail, is being held as an alleged fugitive from justice and was returned to the Steuben County Jail.

DWI, Leaving the Scene of a Crash Arrest

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on August 15, 2022, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a male, age 63, of Sand Hill Road, Caledonia, New York, following an investigation of a reported disabled vehicle on SR 36, Town of Hornellsville, New York. It is alleged that the man operated a motor vehicle while in an intoxicated condition. It is further alleged that the accused crashed into a guide rail in Livingston County, left the scene, and subsequently left his vehicle on SR 36 in the Town of Hornellsville. He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Operating a Motor Vehicle with Greater than .08% Blood Alcohol Content, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash and Moving From Lane Unsafely. The accused was released on traffic summons to appear in the Hornellsville Town Court at a later date.

Assault, Obstruction of Breathing, Obstructing Governmental Administration Arrest

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on August 10, 2022, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Kris E. Calkins, age 50, of Parker Road, Campbell, New York, following an alleged attack on a deputy who was serving as a peacekeeper. It is alleged that Mr. Calkins intentionally attacked, choked and injured the deputy as the deputy was serving as a peacekeeper on Parker Road in Campbell. Mr. Calkins was charged with Assault in the Second Degree, a class D Felony, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing and Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree. Mr. Calkins was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and released. The deputy was treated by EMS at the scene.
