Chief Dunham: “It’s a tough situation”

Frmo staff reports,

An 89-year-old man with dementia who was suspected of strangling his wife to death with a bath towel has died, according to authorities.

Ronald Salyer, who police said went into palliative care following his wife’s death, died Friday afternoon.

Police said a home health aide found Jane Salyer, 89, dead on her bathroom floor Tuesday afternoon.

Ronald Salyer was also on the bathroom floor, alive but “in poor health.”

“It’s a tough situation,” said Chief Thomas Dunham from the Penn Yan Police Department. “It’s really a case-by-case basis, really making sure people have the care they need. In this particular situation, I don’t think the family did anything wrong. I think it was a freak incident that was really unfortunate.”

Jane Salyer’s body was taken to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.
