In a recent development, the Bath man involved in a six-hour standoff with law enforcement last month now faces a total of 44 charges, with a staggering 43 of them being felonies.
The indictment alleges that the 51-year-old Schoonover engaged in a terrifying shootout with officers from the State Police, the Bath Village Police Department, and the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office. The harrowing incident unfolded on August 20th, originating from a domestic dispute that led to the evacuation of nearby residents. The standoff finally came to a conclusion shortly after 1 a.m. the following morning when Schoonover opened fire on the police, prompting them to return fire, ultimately injuring him in the leg.
The extensive list of charges against Schoonover includes:
– 12 counts of first-degree attempted murder, categorized as a class A-1 felony.
– 12 counts of second-degree attempted murder, classified as a class B violent felony.
– 12 counts of first-degree criminal use of a firearm, designated as a class B felony.
– 1 count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, defined as a class D felony.
– 5 counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, identified as a class D felony.
– 1 count of third-degree assault, acknowledged as a class A felony.
– 1 count of endangering the welfare of a child, considered a class A misdemeanor.
Schoonover was immediately hospitalized in Rochester due to the gunshot wound he sustained during the standoff. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Steuben County Jail, where he is currently incarcerated as the legal proceedings unfold.
