The Spotlight Theater of Hornell provides great entertainment, accessible to all

By Vincent Martinelli,

Going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do in my free time. The selection of movie theaters has really dwindled in the area, particularly since the Grand Theater in Wellsville closed. The Grand Theater was housed in a beautiful historic building that deserves preservation and repurposing. The only problem is the building lacks accessibility for those with a disability. Of course the building was constructed well before the introduction of the ADA. As such, there’s a completely inaccessible second floor, bathrooms that don’t meet ADA requirements, extremely narrow doorways, and no handicap parking.

Enter the Spotlight Theater of Hornell, conveniently located on Main Street. The location offers handicap parking in front of the building with unloading space for wheelchairs and ramps for sidewalk access. The building offers three auditoriums on one floor with a number of elevated wheelchair seating areas. The entry and exit doorways provide ample wheelchair access to the building and the double doors inside make entering the auditoriums easy. The bathrooms are a bit narrow, but they’re handicap friendly. The staff is also very welcoming and accommodating.

The Spotlight Theater is typically open seven days a week and schedule changes are listed on their website. Ticket prices are very reasonable with $8 matinees and $9.50 evening showings. In addition, they offer a $1 off senior citizen’s discount for every showing and a rewards card. The screens are very easy to see and the surround sound is easy to hear. Concession prices are extremely reasonable and the offerings are set to improve next month. The facility also offers event hosting and special screenings for large groups and organizations.
