Author: Share:

A library card from the Hornell Public Library can get you more than just books, audiobooks, and DVDs! The library’s Tool Lending Shed and Library of Things collection is home to a wide variety of items, from puzzles and card games to blood pressure cuffs and a Go-Pro Camera Kit!

The library was awarded a grant of $975 from the Foundation for Southern Tier Libraries to expand the library’s Tool Lending Shed collection. Some of the items purchased with funds from the 2023 Grant award included protective googles, gardening gloves, a tool set with a drill, knitting and crochet needles, a fence post driver, DEWALT socket set, and GoPro HER09 Camera. The library also received the 2022 Grant award from the Foundation for Southern Tier Libraries, which provided funds for the shed’s purchase. For a full list of items available for lending, visit the Hornell Public Library’s website.

To borrow an item from the Hornell Library of Things collection, you must be a resident of the Hornell City School District and registered with a library card (it’s free to register).

In addition to items located in the Tool Lending Shed, the library also has items such as Empire Passes that give free access to New York State parks and adult passes to the Corning Museum of Glass (kids 17 and under get in for free). Another great resource available for Hornell patrons to borrow are the Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. The library has also been developing a substantial board game and puzzle collection that many people enjoy.

The items purchased with the grant funds from the Foundation for Southern Tier Libraries will also continue to provide the library with greater resources to offer library programs that empower our community to learn new skills! One of the most successful programs thus far has been the library’s Crochet for Beginners program that takes place every Monday from 5 to 7 PM, led by community member Sherry Pelkey.

Do you have skills you would like to share with your community? The library is looking for empowerment program volunteers to lead “how-to” style classes to give people the opportunity to learn new skills and explore new hobbies! Example classes include “How to Use Common Tools” and “Gardening 101.” Please contact the library at 607-324-1210 or hornellpubliclibrary@gmail.com if you are interested.

The Hornell Public Library is located at 64 Genesee Street, Hornell, NY. The library’s open hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Wednesday 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Friday 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM, and Saturday 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM.
