April at the Hornell Public Library: Exciting Story Times, Blackout Poetry, & a Taylor Swift Celebration!

The Library will be closed April 8th for the Eclipse Party in Shawmut Park

The Hornell Public Library has lots planned for the Hornell community this month, especially for children and teens! Whether you want to celebrate National Poetry Month, listen to Taylor Swift’s new album with friends, or attend some special story times, there’s lots of fun in store. Registration is required for all programs to help with the library’s planning process: call 607-324 1210 or stop by the library to sign up! All programs are free and open to the public.

The Hornell Public Library will be closed April 8th for the Solar Eclipse: read all about the festivities planned at Shawmut Park. The Solar Eclipse event will run from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM. Come grab your free solar eclipse glasses, check out the food and craft vendors, and participate in a variety of fun activities!

Programs for Kids, Tweens & Teens

Multilingual Story Times – Thursdays at 4:00 PM. Discover and explore languages from all around the world. Join in the fun as families read, sing, and play together in a new language each week: Italian (April 4th), Japanese (April 11th), Arabic (April 18th), and Portuguese (April 25th). No previous experience with foreign languages is needed, just bring your curiosity and eagerness to learn!

Children’s Author Visit: Sharmilla Fassbender – Saturday April 13th at 11:00 AM.  Come listen to Sharmilla’s book, “Making Friends Together” and enjoy a fun game and coloring sheets. Her book (intended for children aged 4 and under, and co-authored with her sister Sharminey Selvanathan) is a tale of a group of friends on a journey of kindness in which they rally together to make someone new feel welcomed. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Earth Day Story Time with Mr. Gibbs – Saturday April 20th at 11:00 AM. Get ready for an captivating story time hosted by Mr. Gibbs in celebration of Earth Day!

Homeschool Hangouts: Geography Bee Thursday April 4th at 1:00 PM and Tour of the Hornell Transfer Station Thursday April 18th at 1:00 PM. Join the library’s Homeschool Hangouts for enriching experiences in and outside the library! Challenge your geography knowledge and learn about Hornell’s waste management onsite at the transfer station.

Blackout Poetry – Monday April 22nd at 3:00 PM. Tweens and teens are invited to put their poetry skills to the test to create beautiful blackout poems using old book pages!

T.S. Tortured Poets Department Party – Friday April 26th 3:30-5:00 PM. Calling all Swifties! Come listen to Taylor’s new album The Tortured Poets Department: make friendship bracelets and take the moment and taste it with some pizza and punch!

Programs for Adults

Hornell Area Alzheimer’s & Dementia Caregiver Support Group – Thursday April 4th at 12:30 PM. Are you supporting a loved one struggling with Alzheimer’s? The Alzheimer’s Association hosts monthly Caregiver Support Groups at the Hornell Public Library on the first Thursday of the month from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. Respite is available through Faith in Action, but you must pre-register by calling 607-324-1138.

Writers Group with Lee Marcus – Saturday April 6th at 10:00 AM. Do you have a story inside you, but you aren’t sure how to bring it to life? Join the library’s Writers Group led by Lee Marcus and open to all levels. Just bring something you have written!

Adult Book Club: The Wager by David Grann – Tuesday April 9th at 6:00 PM. Come discuss April’s Book of the Month The Wager: a tale of shipwreck, mutiny and murder by David Grann (author of Killers of the Flower Moon and The Lost City of Z). Several copies are available through the Southern Tier Library System; place a hold on STARCat or call the library to reserve a copy. An eBook and eAudiobook are also available through the Libby app!
