The Sun wants to cover your upcoming local election

By Andrew Harris

2024 will certainly go down in history as a “Homeric” year in politics.

For most of our daily readers, this national presidential election is already settled; Republicans will win almost all rural upstate counties and Democrats will easily win New York State.  It doesn’t matter who the candidates are so we are happily able to ignore those political waters.

Local Congressional, Senate, State Senate, and State Assembly seats are on the ballot as well but no incumbents have faced a primary.  The only potential challenge to the status quo is for the 23rd Congressional district.  Nick Langworthy was elected to that seat in 2022 and the Democrats have presented Tommy Carle as a nominee.  We will certainly be providing coverage of those candidates. Read more about Tommy Carle here.

Closer to home, especially in our hometown of Wellsville NY, 2024 will be a pivotal year at the polls.  The politics has already started with a historic school board race set for May 21.  By the time we have those results, the landscape of the Village Mayor election will be more concrete.  Mayor Randy Shayler faces at least one “write-in” candidate with another currently circulating a petition to appear on the ballot as an Independent.

The month of May will be dominated by the Wellsville School Board election with thirteen candidates vying for three seats.  Three of those candidates are 2-term incumbents with many well-known challengers in the mix.  No matter how you look at the volume of candidates or the motives for seeking election, this election will change the largest school district in Allegany County.

Do you have a hot contest in your county, town, or village that we are not covering?  Please get it touch if you are involved in, or following an important election.  National and state elections tend to drown out the local school or town election.  We believe that all politics really are local and hope to have your politics in our news!!
