STEAM Story Times, Alma de Mexico’s Puppet Show, & Teen Marble Mazes!

The Hornell Public Library has some exciting programs planned for May, including engaging story times for kids and homeschool hangouts. Teens have the chance to create their own marble mazes. Adults can come explore new hobbies with the library’s monthly writing group or weekly crochet club. All programs require registration at least 3 days before the event. Volunteer Opportunity

Library Clean-Up Day – May 4th at 10 AM. Join in on the fun and get some volunteering done! Clean-up will include some light landscaping, yard cleanup, and mulching. Come help make the library ready for the spring season! This is a great opportunity any high schoolers that need volunteer hours.

Programs for Kids, Tweens, & Teens

Homeschool Hangout: Game Day – May 2nd at 1 PM. Come play a variety of board games and make new friends!

STEAM Story Times – Saturdays May 4th, 18th, and 25th at 11 AM. The library’s STEAM story-times are a great opportunity for families to listen to engaging stories and learn new skills with fun STEAM activities. Come celebrate Cinco de Mayo on May 4th and learn about gardening on May 18th.

Toddler Tuesdays – May 7th and May 21st at 3 PM. Calling all families with toddlers! Join in on the fun as we read a book, make new friends, and play toddler-friendly activities.

Alma de Mexico’s Puppet Show – May 11th at 1 PM. Teaching Artists ROC is bringing the Puppets of Alma de Mexico to the library to share the traditional myths and tales of Mexico through puppets! This event is free and is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Homeschool Hangout: Tour of City Hall – May 13th at 1:15 PM.  Join the library at City Hall for a tour to learn all about the ways City Hall contributes to our community and the resources they have available. This will be the final Homeschool Hangout of the year! Call to register and please park behind city hall in the parking lot by Billy Schus and Garcia’s Barbershop.

Marble Maze for Teens – May 9th at 3:15 PM. Tweens and teens, come unleash your creativity by building your own marble maze using a variety of crafting supplies.

Programs for Adults

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group – May 2nd at 12:30 PM. Are you supporting a loved one struggling with Alzheimer’s? The Alzheimer’s Association hosts monthly Caregiver Support Groups at the Hornell Public Library on the first Thursday of the month at 12:30 PM.

Writers Group with Lee Marcus – May 4th at 10 AM. Do you have a story inside you, but you aren’t sure how to bring it to life? Join the library’s Writers Group led by Lee Marcus and open to all levels. Just bring something you have written! Teens are also welcome to attend.

Adult Book Club: Running with Sherman – May 14th at 6 PM. Read Running with Sherman by Christopher McDougall for the library’s next book club discussion. The book follows the healing story of a rescue donkey that is trained for burro racing where humans and donkeys run together, eventually entering the World Championship in Colorado. Several copies are available through the Southern Tier Library System; call the library to reserve a copy.

Crochet for Beginners – Mondays, 5:00-7:00 PM (Don’t have your own hooks? Borrow a crochet kit from the library’s Tool Lending Shed!)

Chess Lessons – Thursdays, 6:00-7:00 PM

Open Chess – Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 PM

The Hornell Public Library is located at 64 Genesee Street, Hornell, NY. The library’s open hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 12:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Wednesday 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Friday 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM, and Saturday 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM.  The library will be closed Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day.
