The grant will fund license plate readers, a new drone, dash cameras, and a 3D laser scanner
From the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office
Sheriff Jim Allard is pleased to report that the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services has awarded the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office a Technology Grant Award in the amount of $665,000. This grant is for specific items used to enhance the ability to investigate crime scenes and provide intelligence data.
The Sheriff’s Office applied for three mobile and fixed license plate readers, which will provide traffic data in specific areas, which can then be shared with our local law enforcement partners and the Monroe and Binghamton Crime Analysis Centers. We also applied for a new drone which will be used to document suspicious fires, crash scenes, SWAT deployments, natural disasters and to assist in missing persons investigations. A third submission for this grant was a 3D laser scanner, used to instantly document large items, crime scenes and crash sites. The final and largest amount of the grant was for every patrol car to be outfitted with a dash camera which also functions as a license plate reader, along with five years of maintenance and data storage. This will bring all digital evidence under one umbrella for discovery purposes and enhance the ability for additional data to be shared with our law enforcement partners and the Crime Analysis Centers.
This grant award will be presented to the Steuben County Legislature in June for acceptance.
