The recent surge by the Hornell girls’ basketball team came to an end on Monday night, but it was not a loss to get upset about.

The No. 1 team in Section V Class B1 was in town, and Waterloo showed why they have sat near the top of the state rankings all season long with a 76-49 win.

Waterloo improved to 19-0 with the win while Hornell, the No. 2 seed in the class, is now 12-5.

“Waterloo is the real deal,” said Hornell coach Brian Dyring. “They are well-rounded. There is a reason they are 19-0 and went undefeated last year.”

To win a section title, Hornell would have to beat Waterloo.

Jane Spitulnik scores two of her seven in the Garcia Babershop Perfect Cut Photo of the Game. Spitulnik and the seniors will be honored tonight during Senior Night as Hornell hosts Le Roy.

“Our goal is to get to that level. We have two more games and two post-season scrimmages and then practices to work hard and get better and hopefully see them again,” Dyring said.

Giavanna White-Principio scored a game-high 27 points for Waterloo while Morgan Carabalo had 22, Jazzmyn Lewis 12 and Macy Carr added 12.

For Hornell, Selena Maldanado scored a team-high 18 with six steals, four assists an four rebounds while Tayghan Doorley had 10, Jane Spitulnik seven and Jordyn Dyring had six.

The two teams actually tried to play last year but it was wiped out in the Covid season when most teams could only play within their county.

“Covid wiped that out,” said Dyring. “We give them a look they don’t see and vice-versa. It was a good game for both of us.”

Last Friday, Hornell had a strong 60-52 win over Bath, Doorley had 26, Hoyt had 13 and Spitulnik had seven points and seven rebounds. This was right after a 60-45 win over Wellsville.

Tonight, Hornell will host Le Roy for Senior Night.
