HORNELL — Sometimes the first game in sectionals can be the toughest. Especially for a team like Hornell with young players who have led on the offensive end with seniors who play the tough defense set the picks, box out and get the rebounds.

Wednesday night in Hornell, nothing phased the Red Raiders as they took care of business defeated Greece Odyssey, 74-41 in a fast-paced, physical contest.

No. 5 Hornell (13-8) will play at No. 4 Pal-Mac on Saturday at 7 p.m. Pal-Mac (14-7) defeated Rochester Prep Charter School (2-17).

Also in the bracket, No. 11 Bishop Kearney, at 1-18 “upset” No. 6 Midlakes (12-8) and will play at Greece Olympia (13-7). No. 1 Northstar (15-3), a low D in other sports, will host Batavia, who beat Livonia last night. No. 2 Newark will host No. 7 Geneva.

Sophomore Gennaro Picco scored 14 of Hornell’s 29 first quarter points and finished with a game-high 28. He was a perfect 7-for-7 from the line including 5-for-5 in the fourth quarter when the fouls picked up.

Hornell’s distance shooting put the game away in the third quarter as Christian Babock, Colin McCumiskey and Shawn Rose lit it up from downtown.

The young gun, freshman P.J. Picco had 16 points for Hornell while Rose had eight and Griffyn Baker and Babcock had six.

For Greece Odyssey (0-20), Ma’Ron McDonald had 12 points.
