It was a long two days for Hornell’s Mason Drew, but the senior won his final match, 8-3 over Dylan Devine of Schalmont to take 7th place at the state tournament.

The highlight of the weekend was an upset win over the #2 seeded wrestler in the states on his way to placing.

The top 8 finishers place and will receive state patches for placing.

Drew finishes his senior year 49-3 and over 200 wins a Hornell High School record.

In the first round, Drew defeated Patrick McClernon of Section I Seaford, 6-1, then lost to Cooper Reed of Central Valley Academy, 13-4.

Saturday was the long day. Drew started by pinning Ethan Randis of Section IV Chenango Valley at the 4:31 mark of the third period.

The pins continued as Drew defeated Liam Rogers of Port Jefferson (Section XI) with a second period pin at 2:11.

That set up the upset win over the #2 seed Mason Welch of Section IV Tioga. Drew picked up a 2-0 win.

Drew then had Reed once again and fell in a tough match, 4-3.

In the match for 7th place, Drew once again defeated a high seed when he defeated Devine, the Section II champion.
