There were incredible performances at the Hornell Invitational as the top track and field athletes in the Southern Tier came together for the prestigious event.

However, the biggest ovation wasn’t from a performer on the track or the throwing events, rather the person who has pushed everyone to be the best they can be for 27 years.

Damian DeMarco.

After 27 years, DeMarco will be retiring this spring as the Hornell High School Head Coach of Cross Country and Outdoor Girls’ Track & Field. He is also a beloved English teacher at the school.

DeMarco was given a plaque and honored during the meet.

The meet MVP’s for 2002 were Angelina Napoleon (Allegany-Limestone, track), Meredith Czajkowski (Bath Haverling, field), James Tette (Penn Yan, track), Jarrod Polk and Lloyd Kinnicutt (Bolivar-Richburg, co-field).

Many of these teams will get together again Saturday for the annual Wellsville Spring Day.
