Michael T. Baldwin Reports:
CBS News: Republican Congressman Tom Reed of New York announced Tuesday that he will resign his seat, effective at the end of the day, cutting his last term a few months short. Reed announced his retirement from Congress in March 2021 after being accused of sexual misconduct. Reed was accused of inappropriately touching a female lobbyist in 2017. He acknowledged the incident in an apology in March of 2021 and said the incident occurred “at a time in my life in which I was struggling.”
WETM: Steuben County Republican Committee Chairman Joe Sempolinski issued a statement following Reed’s announcement, saying he was putting his name forward to finish out the rest of Reed’s current term.
“As the former head district level Congressional staffer for this region, there is no one who knows it better than I do,” Sempolinski said. “As a candidate that has been in the race for over a year, there is no one who can get a special election campaign put together faster. I have already reached out to the party leadership to let them know about my interest in this position.”
Sempolinski announced his candidacy in July 2021, and Reed endorsed him in January 2022.
