HORNELL — Jan. 24, 2010 is a date that will be remembered in Hornell. It was the day Hornell Marine Lance Cpl. Zachary D. Smith, 19, of Hornell, died serving during Operation Enduring Freedom while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Smith was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

On Monday, his mother, Kimberly Smith, gave speech with impact and meaning as she talked about the importance of family and hanging on to every single minute.

The Masons placed a wreath at the monuments on the Broadway Mall. Hornell High School’s 2002 Valedictorian Nick Oyer, who will be attending Princeton, read the Gettysburg Address.

The Hornell High School choir performed a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
