Steamers rally past Mansfield

Home game win with the best fans possible

Mansfield led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning but the Hornell Steamers scored 11 unanswered runs and defeated the Destroyers 11-6 in front of nearly 500 kids at Maple City Park.

Mansfiled scored two runs in the 2nd and single runs in the 3rd and 4th to build a 4-0 lead. Hornell started their rally in the 5th when they scored three runs on one hit. Ryan Hill (Mercyhurst) scored on a throwing error, BJ Arnold (Mercyhurst) scored on a fielding error, and Roland Ryan (Trevecca Nazarene) hit a sac fly to score Torrey Roper (Indiana U of PA).

Colton Burd (Indiana U of PA) led off the 6th with a hit and scored on a long double by Brody Burdett (Alfred State). that tied the game up.

Ryan broke the tie in the 7th with a RBI double and scored on a RBI single by Peyton Johnson (Indiana U of PA). Johnson scored a few batters later following a throwing error.

In the 8th, Roper sent a three-run homer on to Adsit Street to make it 10-4 and Paxton Hughes (Trevecca Nazarene) collected an RBI single.

The Destroyers plated a pair of runs in the 9th but never got any closer.

Burd was 2 for 3 while Hughes was 2 for 4 with a RBI. Johnson was 2 for 5 with a RBI and Roper’s homer was his first of the summer.

Christopher Mattoon earned the win with seven innings of work. He allowed five hits and four earned runs while walking three and striking out six. He retired the final 11 batters he faced. Burdett came out of the pen and pitched the final two innings to earn the save.

The Steamers are home again on Friday when they host Dansville. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
