Big 5th, Strong Pitching lifts Steamers to Victory

The Hornell Steamers scored five in the 5th and got solid pitching from Joe Dolansky (Indiana U of PA) and Tre Slawson (Keuka) in a 7-2 win at Olean on Friday.

Dolansky and Oiler starter Liam Devine traded zeros over the first four innings. Both pitchers exited after four scoreless inning as they got work in to be ready for next week’s playoffs.

Hornell sent nine batters to the plate in the 5th to take the lead. With two outs, Peyton Johnson (Indiana U of PA) hit a two-run single, Jordyn Smith (Oklahoma Wesleyan) hit a RBI single, and Colton Burd (Indiana U of PA) capped the inning with a two-run single.

Olean scored their only runs of the game in the 6th when Dylan Vincent hit a RBI double and scored on a single by Blaise Zeiders.

The Steamers got both of those runs back in the 7th when Smith and Burd both scored on wild pitches.

Slawson got stronger as his relief appearance went on and held the Oilers off the board the rest of the way. He went five innings allowing four hits and one run. He walked one and struck out three. 

Dolansky allowed just one single in the first four innings. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six.

Smith was 2 for 3, Torrey Roper (Indiana U of PA) was 2 for 4, and Johnson was 2 for 5.

Hornell plays their final regular season road game on Saturday when they travel to Mansfield for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
