Steuben County Sheriff: Two arrested for violent crimes, one already in county jail

Deputies contend with a knife-wielding man and a jailhouse assault

September 7, 2022 Menacing, Obstruction of Breathing and Harassment Arrest

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on September 5, 2022, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Anthony A. DeVito, age 32, of Victory Highway, Painted Post, New York, following an investigation of a reported domestic assault in the Town of Erwin. It is alleged that Mr. DeVito choked, struck and threatened another person with a knife. Mr. DeVito was charged with Menacing in the Second Degree, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing and Harassment in the Second Degree. It is further alleged that an active Bench Warrant for Mr. DeVito had been issued by Steuben County Court. Mr. DeVito was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and committed to the Steuben County Jail.

September 9, 2022 Assault Arrest

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on September 7, 2022, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Brent A. Crandall, age 33, of Hamilton Street, Painted Post, New York, following an investigation of a reported assault in the Steuben County Jail. It is alleged that Mr. Crandall struck another inmate causing injury to that person. Mr. Crandall was charged with Assault in a Correctional Facility, a class D Felony. Mr. Crandall was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Court and returned to the Steuben County Jail.
