Friday evening on the friendly confines of Maple City Park, the Hornell Red Raiders girls’ soccer team played host to the Dansville Mustangs for the for the third meeting of the year.
The Raiders (13-3) won the last two meetings over Dansville (7-11) and looked to be victorious for a third time during the opening game of B2 play. The Mustangs came into the game after winning their opening game against Wellsville 4-1.
Dansville gathered before the opening kick the cheer was “Believe” and the Mustangs came out with a full belief they could win. It didn’t take long for the defense to have to take the opening cheer to work.
The defense showed up early and often in the first half and Dansville Goalie Emma Butters made several amazing saves and a few one on ones with Hornell’s leading scorer Ireland Harrison.
Dansville was the first to get on the score board as Ellie Mountzouros took a serve from midfield toward the goal and placed the ball to the right of the out-streched hand of Alexis Patricks hand for an early 1-0 lead.
Maddie Moore, Harrison and Selena Maldanado scored goals as Hornell went on to win the game 5-1 improving their record to 14-3 on the season.
Hornell will play Mynderse at Dansville Central School at 7:30 p.m. in the next round.
