Need a tool, or a dolly, or an emergency roadside kit ?

The library’s new Tool Lending Shed was purchased with the grant award funds from the Foundation for Southern Tier Libraries

It’s that time of year again when it seems like there is a never-ending supply of leaves to be raked! Did you know you can now head over to the Hornell Public Library and borrow a rake from their Tool Lending Shed?

The library’s Tool Lending Shed is a new and exciting resource available to our community, made possible in part by a grant award of $1,750.00 from The Foundation for Southern Tier Libraries. The library is committed to providing resources and services to our community that can enrich or enhance their day-to-day lives, as well as overcome socioeconomic barriers. The library’s director, Denise Chilson, understands the community’s needs: “Many people in our community cannot afford their own tools, do not have the space to permanently store them, or do not need them on a regular basis.”

Currently, the shed is equipped with rakes, a dolly cart, gardening tool sets, emergency roadside kits, and birdwatching kits. The installment of the Tool Lending Shed has inspired the director and staff at Hornell Public Library to look into building a “Library of Things” that would extend the materials offered in the shed beyond yard & gardening equipment. They are also looking into hosting “Fix-it Café” sessions where community members could come together to help repair or repurpose materials and take advantage of the items available in the Tool Lending Shed.

“I hope our growing Tool Lending Shed will address our community’s needs and provide them with the necessary tools to build, repair, and upcycle sustainably. I also hope it will inspire our community to come together to learn new skills on our journey of lifelong learning.” – Denise Chilson, Library Director.

To check out items from the Tool Lending Shed, please visit the library’s front desk and request the tools you would like to borrow. To borrow the tools, you must have a library card—if you don’t have one yet, you can sign up for one for free! The library is still developing this collection so they are asking for suggestions and feedback regarding what you would like to see in the Tool Lending Shed.

The library’s open hours are Monday-Thursday 12:00 PM-7:00 PM, Fridays 1:00 PM-5:00 PM, and Saturdays 9:00 AM-12:00 PM.  If you have any questions, please contact the Hornell Public Library at (607) 324-1210 or via e-mail at hornellpubliclibrary@gmail.com. You can keep up-to-date on the library’s latest events & programming by following their Facebook Page, joining the Hornell Public Library Patrons Facebook group, and visiting their website https://hornellpubliclibrary.org/.
