Hornell Police track down wanted man in remote Alfred NY cabin

Acting on a tip to the possible whereabouts of wanted person James W.L. Burgess, Hornell Police and Alfred Police searched a property on Green Rd. in the Town of Alfred. Officers located Mr. Burgess in a cabin on this property and he was taken into custody without incident.

Burgess was wanted for Failing to Appear for sentencing in Steuben County Court on October 5th, 2022 for 2 counts of Burglary in the Second Degree (C-Felony), 2 counts of Unlawful Surveillance in the Second Degree (E-Felony), and Menacing in the Third Degree (B-Misdemeanor).

The charges stemmed from incidents that occurred in the early morning hours of July 15th, 2021 in which Mr. Burgess unlawfully entered two private residences in the City of Hornell and surreptitiously recorded the residents within without their knowledge or consent.

Mr. Burgess was transported to Steuben County Jail to await his appearance in court.

The Hornell Police Department would like to thank the agencies involved in the search for Mr. Burgess including the Alfred Police Department, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Canisteo Police Department, Wellsville Police Department, Andover Police Department, Dansville Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police, Louisville Police Department (Ohio) and the Franklin Township Police Department (Ohio). We would also like to thank the community for providing us with valuable information that ultimately led to the arrest of Mr. Burgess.
