Legislators near the end of a successful and productive 2022 session

Sessler Environmental Services, of Macedon, was awarded $94,825 Monday by the Steuben County Legislature for the demolition of the Mt. Washington Highway Garage and the Curtis Highway Garage, with construction of new garages at both sites when demolition is complete.

The firm submitted the lowest bid which also was reviewed and given initial approval by the county Legislature’s special Space Committee last week.

In other action, the county Legislature approved:

  • Introduction of a local law regarding apportionment of the voting strength of each member of the Steuben County Legislature as determined by the 2020 Federal Census. The apportionment – or weight – of each legislator’s vote is expected to provide equal representation on all resolutions, local laws, motions or proposals to be voted upon by the Legislature.
  • Accepting a state Community Development Block Grant of $198,000 for well and septic repairs; water and sewer line hookups; and manufactured housing replacements to be administered through a contract with Arbor Development.
  • Approving a change order to replace the existing roof on the Civil Defense Building for $40,863.00. The roof has been deemed to be past its useful life.
  • Accepting New York State Office of Mental Health funding in the amount of $100,000 to support peer-to- peer counseling programs for veterans in Steuben.
  • Re-appointing the county Board of Elections commissioners for two-year terms. Republican Veronica Olin and Democrat Colleen Hauryski are responsible for seeing all federal, state and local requirements for voters’ rights, and fair and impartial elections are carried out.

Olin and Hauryski also were recognized by the county Legislature for their efforts, and those of their team, in meeting the challenges of incorporating new state and federal elections requirements during 2022.
