The Hornell Red Raiders moved to 6-2 on the season with 84-47 win over the Canisteo-Greenwood Redskins at home on Tuesday night.

Hornell Coach Kirk Scholes liked the pace he saw from his players.

“I thought we pushed the ball on makes and misses pretty well,” Scholes said. “I also liked how we moved the ball early against the zone.”

Hornell came out with an early 26-9 lead after the first quarter and led 49-22 at the half.

“Gennaro Picco got us going with 15 in the first quarter. I liked that he was aggressive but wasn’t over-dribbling to get his looks. He has so much ability, and I’ve got to put him in spots to get good looks on or off the ball.” Scholes said.

Picco led all scorers with 26 points on the night.

Hornell played a solid defensive game as well. The Raiders grabbed 14 steals on the night with Shawn Rose, Gates Miller, and Gennaro Picco tallying three apiece.

“I thought defensively we had good ball pressure on the perimeter. I thought we changed defenses well, and the kids worked hard throughout the game,” Scholes added.

Another key was the play of Shawn Rose.

“I liked what I got from Shawn Rose tonight,” Scholes said. “I’ve been on him about being more aggressive off the dribble and looking for his own shot more. He had a season high (16 points) tonight, and we are going to need his offense the second half of the season.” Rose also picked up 4 rebounds and 2 assists in the game.

PJ Picco led all players in rebounds (9) and assists (4) and netted 13 points for the Raiders. Canisteo-Greenwood’s JJ Reese had a team high 12 points in the loss. C-G’s Carson Chaffee and Noah Warriner both grabbed 7 rebounds apiece.

The Red Raiders travel to Cal-Mum while the Redskins host Campbell-Savona on Thursday night.

In JV news, the Raiders beat the Redskins 58-43. Three JV Raiders scored double-digits with Demayne Dixon leading the

Raiders with 16 points. Marco Picco and Kellen Crowe had 13 & 12 respectively. For the Redskins, Kevin Sirianni led his team with 16 points.
