Winning close games in past years was always tough for the young Hornell Red Raiders girls’ basketball team.
On Monday night, two veterans stepped up and made sure there would be a trip to the finals where an epic rematch awats.
Coming in as the #3 seed in the Section V Class B2 tournament, Hornell upset #2 Mynderse, 61-56 with a comeback and a strong finish to put the game away.
Senior Maddie Moore (13 points, seven steals) and Jordyn Dyring (15 points), now a veteran on the team, had a strong fourth-quarter performance combining for 13 points to hold off Mynderse.
The Red Raiders were down 42-28 but chipped into the lead and then played outstanding defense the last two minutes to secure the victory. Selena Maldanado (seven points) made clutch free throws down the stretch.
Hornell (14-8) will now face #1 Dansville (16-6) in the finals. Dansville downed Wellsville in the other semi-final game, 51-38, pulling away from a tie late in the the third (story HERE).
They will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Rush-Henrietta. See the Section V site for electronic tickets.
