It’s not often a 7-0 game is considered a close game, but Wednesday night, it was just that in Canisteo.

Noah Warriner took a tough luck loss and Taige Stewart was lights out in relief as the duo combined to strike out 15 batters and allowed just eight hits.

However, Avoca-Prattsburgh used timely hitting and a solid performance on the hill from senior Haden Abbott to secure the win and improve to 8-1 on the season.

Abbott scattered six hits in a complete game shutout, striking out 11 batters and improve his record to 5-0 on the season.

“The game was much closer than the score indicated and we were able to get out of some jams early or Warriner may have picked up the win,” said A-P coach Dennis Miles. “Canisteo-Greenwood left five runners on the first two innings and we made some great plays on defense to take the early lead.

In the top of the first, it looked like Warriner would get out of a jam, but senior Jamel Crowder ripped an RBi single followed by RBI’s from Josiah Stilson and Connor Hammond for an early 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the first, Stewart led off by crushing a double but A-P got the out at third after a dingle by Korbyn Osterwald. A-P junior catcher Macoy Putnam, a left-hander, then threw out his first of three runners attempting to steal to get out of the mess.

In the second, Matt Streeter singled and Kadon Mitchell reached, but Crowder and Chris Abbott made big plays on defense to stop any runs from scoring.

Haden Abbott then settled in during the third inning with a 5-0 lead. The senior struck out the 9-1-2 batters with an immaculate 9-pitch inning, all strikes and strikeouts.

The A-P Titans then used 14 players in different situations hitting and on defense to secure the shutout. Haden Abbott stayed under the pitch count and struck out three of the last four outs.

At the plate for A-P, Jamel Crowder, Josiah Stillson (two hits, two stolen bases) and Connor Hammond had RBI’s. A-P tacked on a fifth run in the second when Macoy Putnam singled, stole a base and scored on a wild pitch.

Crowder also had two hits, 2 RBI’s and scored twice for A-P, Haden Abbott had a hit, scored two runs and stole two bases, Sawyer Devoe had a hit and scored and James Forte had a single.

Evin Sarvis also had a hit for Canisteo-Greenwood (2-2).
