City of Hornell and Hornell YMCA Make a Splash with Pool Partnership!

The City of Hornell Common Council dove into action on April 17th by approving the pool management agreement with the Hornell YMCA for the City pool at Veterans Memorial Park at James St. With the partnership going well for the past two seasons, the Council made the unanimous decision to renew for the 2023 season, which runs from June 1st to September 5th.

Under the agreement, the City will continue to provide maintenance for the pool and pool house, and contribute to the lifeguards’ wages. Meanwhile, the YMCA will have access to the pool from 10am-12pm for team practices and City-approved YMCA swim lessons, programs, and other aquatic activities, while providing programming for the general public with open swim hours of 12:30pm-6:30pm.

Mayor John Buckley expressed his excitement about the partnership by stating, “Contracting with the YMCA has been a great success the last two seasons, and we are happy to enter an agreement with the YMCA again this year. The partnership is beneficial for both parties, but the biggest winner is the community. It’s much more community-friendly and enjoyable for all. We can’t wait for this season to begin!”

YMCA Executive Director Kristoph Kocan was similarly excited regarding the partnership, “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with the City of Hornell for the management of the pool at Veterans Memorial Park. We’ve had great success the past two seasons and remain committed to ensuring that the pool remains accessible and fun for all community members to enjoy. We are looking forward to another great season partnering with the City, and again look forward to the tremendous support we have received from the community sponsoring our ‘Free Swim Fridays’ which enabled us to provide multiple free admission days.”

The pool is anticipated to open for swimming on June 25, 2023 with general open swim hours from 12:30pm-6:30pm. City residents can enjoy a refreshing dip for just $0.75, while non-residents will pay $1.50 per person, and YMCA members swim for free.

The City of Hornell and the YMCA eagerly anticipate a fun-filled 2023 pool season at Veteran’s Memorial Park. So, prepare to grab your swimsuits, sunscreen, and towels, and make a splash at Veteran’s Memorial Park on June 25th!
