The Avoca-Prattsburgh softball team starts 7th-graders at second and shortstop and has a mix of youth a few senior leaders. The results took some time, but the team is heating up heading into the final days of the season before sectionals.

Here are two photo galleries from Steve Harrison and stories on victories from Chris Brooks:

FILLMORE — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore put down the gas on a quick hop to their step Friday night, scoring four of the game’s first five runs to take the lead over visiting Avoca/Prattsburgh.

Down by three and with time becoming a luxury, the Lady Titans made the absolute most out of the clutch opportunity ahead, scoring 15 unanswered runs in the last three innings of play, pulling ahead of Fillmore beginning in the top of the fifth and never looking back from that point on, as they rolled towards a 16-8 road win.

Four unanswered runs were accounted for by the Lady Eagles (5-9) to start their battle after an early Avoca/Prattsburgh lead through the top half of the opening frame. The defenses would then buckle in to pitch two straight shutout frames on the field before the floodgates were broken through by the Lady Titans down the stretch.

From the fifth inning forward, the game was all under control of the visitors, as they totaled the next 15 runs at the plate, including a go-ahead, four-run frame marqueed by a two-run blast off the bat of Carmen Dailey. With a 5-4 lead in hand, the Lady Titans established more ground behind multiple walks and multiple RBI swings to set up an eight-run frame of insurance that helped them pull away and out of reach from Fillmore for good, despite one last push in the bottom of the seventh.

Both teams combined to record 26 hits at the plate, with Avoca/Prattsburgh claiming the 15-11 advantage in that department. Amongst the big bats were Lily Jorritsma and Jordan Swift, who recorded three hits each. Lily Hausauer and Emma Carlton each had two hits. Carlton also picked up Avoca/Prattsburgh’s win in the circle, fanning six Fillmore batters.

For the Lady Eagles, Mattie McCumiskey had the big bat, scoring a pair of two-run home runs at the beginning and end of the battle. Oakley Frazier and Grace Russell each recorded two hits to further the offense’s cause. In the circle, Mercedes Wolcott extended her start into the fifth inning, fanning one and walking five.

Fillmore is back on the field on Thursday over the road, visiting the undefeated Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

BELMONT — At any given moment and at any given time, the balance of power can change in an instant. All it takes is that one massive shift in momentum. In the midst of a pitcher’s duel between Avoca/Prattsburgh’s Emma Carlton and Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Hannah Southwick-Powers, that power surge occurred.

A tide-turning sequence created by Ellie Harrell.

The Avoca/Prattsburgh catcher made the most of the opportunity at the plate after both teams traded a pair of scoreless innings. With the bases loaded, Harrell sent a pitch into orbit far enough for it to go yard, as she unloaded a grand slam to account for all four of the team’s runs to pull ahead. The Lady Titans were able to build off of it one more time to branch their lead for good, securing the 8-0 shutout in Belmont.

The grand slam for Harrell would come right in the third inning after both defenses exchanged scoreless frames on the field, as Avoca/Prattsburgh loaded up the bases following two quick outs by the Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-5) defense.

The flood gates would soon open up later on for the Lady Titans, as they went on to build in the top of the fifth with four more runs. The big bat in the frame would belong to Lily Hausauer, as she belted a two-run single to push their distance even further away from the hosts in gray and black, ultimately for good.

Despite the defeat, Hannah Southwick-Powers was outstanding on the mound for Genesee Valley/Belfast, striking out 13 and walking four in her complete game. On the other side, Emma Carlton provided a similar performance of her own for the visitors in gold and black, fanning 11 and walking two in her victorious complete game.

ANDOVER — 28 runs on 19 hits headlined an all-out offensive and special teams blitz between Avoca/Prattsburgh and Andover/Whitesville in softball field. Through it all, it was a game capitalized upon by the hosts in white and blue to begin.

But the Lady Titans would find their groove later on beginning in the third inning, as they went on to score 16 unanswered runs against Andover/Whitesville to rally their way back from an early deficit and pull ahead permanently in a high scoring affair, navigating towards an 18-10 victory.

Andover/Whitesville (0-4) was the first to make their way onto the board beginning after a scoreless first inning was issued between both teams, as they used baserunning to their utmost advantage to score the game’s first two runs in the bottom of the second. Avoca/Prattsburgh would respond right away by tying the game a half-inning later, with special teams play of their own, scoring two runs.

In the midst of the early back-and-forth exchanging of pleasantries, Andover/Whitesville would regain the lead with the help of Gabbi Hall, as she drove in a pair of runs on a single into the outfield to jumpstart a three-run third inning to capture a 5-2 lead — the last time they would hold possession of the driver’s seat.

In the middle frames, Avoca/Prattsburgh assumed complete control of their own destiny, as they capitalized on everything they were faced up against. As a result, 16 unanswered runs were scratched across the plate, beginning with a seven-run top of the fourth inning ignited by their baserunning and special teams play once more.

Andover/Whitesville would not go down without one last fight however during their final at-bats, as they applied the pressure late against Avoca/Prattsburgh with five runs in the seventh to cut their deficit down to eight. But the Lady Titans were able to hang onto their lead and turn it into a victory.

Andover/Whitesville collected seven hits in all at the plate with Hall leading with three of them, including a seventh inning RBI-triple. In the circle, Makaila Brewster went all seven innings, tallying four strikeouts and six walks.

For Avoca/Prattsburgh, the win was credited to Emily Hammond, who handed out nine chairs and walked seven in her complete game. At the plate, Emma Carlton led the bats with a perfect 5-for-5 outing and three runs scored.
