A fire broke out at the landfill on Saturday, cause unknown

HORNELL – The Steuben County Landfill Transfer Station in Hornell will be closed until further notice, according to county Public Works Commissioner Eric Rose.

The closure is due to a fire Saturday night at the transfer station, Rose said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

Rose thanked the South Hornell Volunteer Fire Department, which was assisted by North Hornell and Canisteo Volunteer Fire departments, and Butler Construction personnel, for their efforts at the scene.

Rose recommended patrons of the Hornell transfer station use the transfer station in Wayland and the Bath landfill, at 5632 Turnpike Road, until operations resume in Hornell.
