Sad News: Livingston County Sheriff reports drowning death

An 18 year old Springwater man was found in a farm pond

SPRINGWATER – Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty advises of a fatal drowning incident that occurred Thursday afternoon in the Town of Springwater.

On June 1st, 2023 at approximately 1:40 pm, Sheriff’s Deputies and emergency personnel responded to Carney Hollow Road in the Town of Springwater for the report of a person who may have drowned in a pond.

Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on scene and learned that the male, identified as 18 year-old Emanuel J. Hershberger of Springwater NY, had entered a pond on the property to go swimming with another family member.

Hershberger began to go in distress while in the water. According to a witness Hershberger did eventually go underwater and did not resurface.

The Sheriff’s Underwater Search and Recovery Team (USRT) responded to the scene and later recovered Hershberger’s body from the water.

The Springwater Fire Department, Livingston County EMS, and Livingston County Office of Emergency Management also assisted at the scene along with the Livingston County Coroner’s Office.

Handling the on scene operations and investigations for the Sheriff’s Office were members of the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Forensic Identification Unit, Underwater Search and Recovery Team and Drone Unit.
