Community Bike Ride with the Hornell Police Department on Wednesday August 16

The Hornell Public Library and the Hornell Police Department have teamed up to offer two bike-themed events in August featuring a bicycle safety event and a community bike ride. In honor of the Summer Reading Program’s theme “All Together Now”, the library and police department are working together to give kids the chance to learn how to keep themselves and others safe on the road and to bring community members together to explore our beautiful city.

Rules of the Road for Beginning Cyclists: Ages 5 to 10, will take place on August 9th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM behind the library in the back parking lot where children can come learn bicycle safety presented by the Hornell Police Department. This event will include instructions on how to stay safe wherever you ride, along with a practice course and a demonstration by the Hornell Police Department’s bicycle patrol.

The following week on Wednesday, August 16th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM there will be a community bike ride. The Hornell Police Department has mapped out a fun route starting at the library that is suitable for all skill levels and Friends of the Hornell Public Library will be providing water at the halfway point.

Participants of both events will be required to wear helmets. If you do not have a helmet, please contact the Hornell Police Department to be fitted for a helmet for free. All children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult for both the bicycle safety program and the community bike ride. While the library and police department have taken safety precautions the participants of both bike events ride at their own risk.

The Hornell Public Library’s director, Denise Chilson, is thrilled to be offering these two events this summer:

“I’m looking forward to having the community come together and show our Hornell pride! Bicycling is a great way to get out, exercise, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Riding as a community may even encourage people to trade in their cars for the day and bike to work to contribute to building a healthier planet.” The director and library staff look forward to seeing everyone at both events and hearing from the community about what other types of community-focused programs they would like to see offered in the future.

In order to properly prepare for safety protocols and refreshments, registration is required for both events. Sign up today for the Rules of the Road for Beginning Cyclists: Ages 5 to 10 and/or the Community Bike Ride by calling the library at 607-324-1210. Follow the library on Facebook to keep an eye out for any updates on the two events regarding inclement weather or air quality conditions.
