A message to Hornell from José Cruzado, candidate for 4th Ward Alderman

Cruzado announced his candidacy in April 2023

By José Cruzado,

Hornell, a special place in a beautiful valley.   I have lived in many places in my life but none with the generational history that you see in Hornell.  Why do they stay? Is it the sense of belonging or the sense of safety a small town offers? Is it the beauty of the area or the potential of economic growth and development.

I have lived in the area for the last 12 years and had visited many times before that with my wife Susan Cruzado (Fitzgerald), a Hornell, NY native.  Hornell has changed in some minor ways since then.  For one, there are many new faces in the city. This could be due to the ability of the folks at Alstom to acquire new contracts or the lure of moving out of larger cities during Covid.  In either event Hornell appears to be a more diverse city.  Just a thought but…are we doing everything we can as a city to continue to develop a strong relationship with Alstom and its employees?

Since I began visiting Hornell, I have seen several amazing new local businesses open.  Unfortunately, we have also seen many close.  I cannot overstate the importance of City Government’s role in the success of local business.  I would ask the citizens of Hornell continue to visit long time staples in Hornell like Marino’s Restaurant, Pizza King, Giovanni’s, the Italian Villa, America’s Choice, JC’s Café, Billy Schu’s, and fairly new businesses like the Railhead Brewery, Pat’s Pizza and Hush just to name a few.  Note the hard-working staff and the impact that a business closing in Hornell has on their lives and consider the economic impact on the area.

Hornell has an amazing history, committed residence, and has an established infra-structure to support some additional growth and improvements.  I walk miles every week throughout the city and have noticed some similar patterns in housing and the cleanliness of the city.  There needs to be a stronger response by City Government to assure that the City of Hornell remains vibrant.  I truly believe that there must be a way to support residents and landlords, law enforcement, and code enforcement in a bipartisan way that keeps the city’s success in the forefront.

I look forward to serving Hornell in any capacity but would be honored to have earned the votes of the residents of the 4th Ward.

It is the memories that ingrain our hometowns into our minds, and it is our most inner desire to have a sense of belonging and that is why so many remain or return to their hometowns. Being kind to our neighbors, supporting local business, and being open to working together is the minimum we can do to assure great memories for the residents of Hornell.
