Jordan Harris will be the winery’s new Chief Operating Officer

By Jim Moore, Chief Finger Lakes Enthusiast Exciting developments are underway at Heron Hill Winery, where a series of strategic changes and additions are shaping the winery’s trajectory. Notably, Winemaker Jordan Harris has been appointed as Heron Hill Winery’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), a pivotal role that reflects the company’s commitment to progress. The establishment is also undergoing a fresh label redesign for the Heron Hill Classic Wine Series, coupled with the infusion of a dynamic, youthful team to support owners John and Josephine Ingle in steering Heron Hill towards new horizons. Founded by John and Josephine Ingle in 1977, Heron Hill Winery embarked on its journey with two core principles: sustainable/organic farming and the creation of exceptional quality wines. Avid wine enthusiasts at heart, the Ingles harbored a vision of nurturing their family on a pesticide-free farm, fostering a connection with nature’s bounty. Their initial venture unfolded seamlessly in the Finger Lakes region, where John cultivated a thriving vineyard, and the wines crafted became sought-after classics, solidifying their place as pioneers in the Finger Lakes wine scene.
However, as with any flourishing region, the challenge of diversification arose—how to captivate an ever-expanding audience. For Heron Hill, maintaining the commitment to quality viticulture remained paramount. Amid growth and evolution, John and Josephine never lost sight of this core value. Their efforts materialized into the creation of a vibrant café, a sought-after destination, and a communal hub that extended its influence far beyond the lake’s shores. Fast-forward to 2020, a year that brought unprecedented challenges. Amid the global upheaval, John and Josephine perceived an opportunity to realign with their roots—grape cultivation and winemaking. Recognizing the need for a dedicated team to guide Heron Hill towards renewed excellence, the Ingles set out to assemble a diverse, well-rounded group that understood the evolving world of wine. Enter Jordan Harris, appointed as winemaker in June 2020 and subsequently assuming the role of COO in 2023. Jordan’s innovative background seamlessly complements the Ingles’ pioneering spirit and commitment to sustainability. With over 20 years of experience, Jordan brings a fresh perspective and an unwavering focus on the future. Despite his accolades—ranging from international sommelier recognition to hospitality awards—Jordan’s greatest aspiration lies in Heron Hill’s success and its collective youthful team. His career trajectory, spanning from Niagara, Ontario, to Virginia, and finally back to the Finger Lakes, has honed his expertise in cool climate wines, with a special emphasis on Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Blaufränkisch. Beyond Jordan’s leadership, Heron Hill’s revitalization extended across various facets of the business. The team embraced youthful dynamism with appointments like Jacqueline Wooster as Director of Sales, Jessie Gorcica as Marketing and Operations Manager, Chris Schmitt as Keuka Tasting Room Manager, and Stephanie Chrysler as Bristol Tasting Room Manager. Complementing Jordan’s winemaking prowess is Assistant Winemaker Laura Zuzek, while Jeanine Housman oversees the financial aspect. In the vineyard, Kirby Field and Don Riesenberger collectively steer the vineyard management efforts. This cohesive and passionate team joins forces to propel Heron Hill to unprecedented heights. A standout among the recent changes is the unveiling of a brand-new label design for the Classic Wine Series. This transformation aligns with Heron Hill’s aspiration to not only craft top-tier wines from sustainable fruit but also present them in an appealing manner. The newly designed labels, including Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, and Blaufränkisch, are set to grace the shelves in the near future. Embracing challenges as opportunities, Heron Hill’s journey continues, leading the charge in the Finger Lakes’ wine landscape. The winery’s commitment to sustainability, excellence, and accessibility remains steadfast as it evolves and grows.
