From Hornell High School Athletics,
The Hornell Red Raiders rounded out five games on the road with a 4-1 victory of the Wayland-Cohocton Eagles Saturday night to capture the Annual Spud Jug Trophy. The win gave the Raiders a four game win streak going into the final game of the season.
After a tough 3-2 loss at home to the Eagles earlier in the season, the Raiders were ready for the rematch. Their focus, teamwork, and hustle was evident from the first minutes of play. “Hornell won a tough game against a very good Wayland-Cohocton team,” said Raiders’ head coach, Jim Tobin.
Gennaro Picco opened up the scoring on a corner kick by PJ Picco. Later in the first half, Jack Emo netted a perfectly placed 40 yard direct kick to put Hornell up 2-0 at halftime. Wyatt Evingham added the third goal, and Emo closed out the scoring with his second goal of the night.
Emo’s second goal marked #26 on the season to top his previous school record of 25 in a single season at Hornell High School.
Hornell was anchored defensively by Marco Picco and Cody Cardamone. “We played our best game of the year,” commented Tobin, “a nice time to really get ready for sectionals.”
The Raiders went into Saturday’s game with a three game win streak. After a tough 1-0 loss to Livonia on September 23rd, Hornell dominated Dansville 7-2, Newark 5-1, and Haverling 4-1. The Raiders are currently the #3 seed in Section V, Class B behind #2 Livonia and #1 Mynderse Academy.
The final game of the regular season for the Red Raiders comes Thursday night at home where Hornell will hold Senior Night before they face the #2 seeded Livonia Bulldogs. Seven seniors will be recognized before the 6:30pm game.
