The Board of Public Safety unanimously approved the appointments of three officers from provisional to patrolman status for the Hornell Police Department. Effective March 14, 2024, Tanner Berglund, Trevor Stiles, and Matthew Hanrahan will officially assume their roles as patrolmen for the City of Hornell.

Chief Ted Murray commended the officers for their work, stating, “Our three new officers are doing a phenomenal job and have been great additions to our department. We’re pleased to see them transition from provisional appointments to patrolmen after successfully completing the necessary steps.  The officers have completed the academy, the physical fitness tests, the field training, and finally, the Civil Service examination. They are already doing great things, and we look forward their continued contributions throughout their careers here in Hornell.”

Mayor John Buckley was also enthusiastic about the appointments, stating, “I’ve had positive interactions with all three officers, and I’ve heard similar feedback from the community. They’re making a meaningful difference in our community.”

The new officers expressed their thoughts about the job so far. Officer Stiles states, “It’s been enjoyable. Everyday something different happens and it’s been fun to learn and be involved.” Officer Hanrahan shared a similar sentiment, stating, “Being able to observe the different possibilities and reactions to situations has been very interesting.” Officer Berglund provided his thoughts, “I really enjoy learning and understanding more about how much goes into everything. It’s interesting to take what we learned in the academy, apply it in the field, and the different laws for each situation. You can arrive at a situation and it can go completely different than expected.”

Mayor Buckley concluded by thanking the officers for their dedication, “We recognize this is a tough job that can be unpredictable.  We’re thankful for your commitment and appreciate your efforts to serving our community.”
