James E. Grossman, 87, entered into the presence of his Savior on Thursday (April 4, 2024) at Maple City Rehabilitation and Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Grossman was born on December 16, 1936 in Andover to Linford and Sylvia Mae (Cartwright) Grossman. He was a 1954 graduate of Andover Central School and served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1958 and again from 1960 to 1966 where he was decorated with a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. On October 31, 1957, he married Elizabeth A. Taylor, who survives.
Jim worked as a maintenance supervisor for Bethesda Hospital in North Hornell from 1967 into the1970’s. He later worked in maintenance for Andover Central School for 6 years and finished up his career working maintenance for Wellsville Manor Care Center.
In addition to his wife of 66 years, Jim is survived by four children, James E. (Sheri) Grossman, Jr. of Windsor, Colo., Denise L. Grossman of Seals, Ala., Jerry R. Grossman of Andover and George M. (Susan Blovet-Stocum) Grossman of Elm Valley; one sister, Lorretta A. Butler of Hornell; one son-in-law, Jack Randall of Scio; one sister-in-law, Carol Grossman of Andover; 10 grandchildren, Stacy (Sean) Allen of Scio, David (Candice) Grossman and Jeremiah Grossman, both of Windsor, Colo., Nathan (Mollee) Grossman of Seattle, Wash., Stephen (Kelsey) Grossman of Lacey, Wash., Joshua Grossman of Brookfield, Mo., Alyssa (Jake) Duvall of Canandaigua, Lisa (Dylan Carlton) Grossman of Hornell and Casey Grossman and Brittany (Darren Stanford) Grossman, both of Perry; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Pamela Randall; two brothers, Jesse Grossman and Richard Grossman; an infant sister, Beverly Lorraine Grossman; his step-father, George O’Dell and a brother-in-law, Robert Butler.
Jim loved his Lord, family and country, in that order. He loved taking trips with his wife, whether by car, train or bus. They traveled all over the country, visiting family and re-visiting old haunts. They also enjoyed just driving through the local countryside or taking walks together. As Dad and Grandpa, God gifted him with wisdom as expressed by this poem by his son:
The Best Father by Far
I remember there was times we did not get along.
Back when I knew right and you was always wrong.
You would speak of the things I was yet to know.
When the time came you thrilled saying I told you so.
I remember saying I could never be like you,
Find myself acting the way you used to do.
In time I have learned such a wise man you are.
God has blessed me with the best father by far.

Jim always had a joke or a story to tell and had a nice, friendly way of teasing people. He was an avid Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees fan.
Jim was a 52-year member of the Arkport American Legion. He was a 40-year member of the Andover First Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. He was also a long-time member of the Andover Golden Agers.
There will be a time of visitation on Tuesday (April 9) from 4-6 p.m. at the Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. The memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 at the Andover First Baptist Church with Pastor Daryl Ordiway officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
