BATH — Steuben County’s Drug Take Back Day Saturday (Apr 27) netted 781 pounds of unwanted and expired medications, according to Connie Terry, Steuben Prevention Coalition Opioid Committee (SPCOC) Program Assistant.
The event Saturday saw a significant increase compared to the October 2023 collection of 81 pounds, reported by the SPCOC committee.
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s nationwide effort is held twice a year and hosted locally by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office with support by the SPCOC .
Residents of Steuben County were encouraged to clean out their medicine cabinets and safely dispose of any unneeded medications.
“Thank you to everyone who participated in this event,” Terry said. “When people safely dispose of unwanted and expired medication, they not only protect their family, but also their community.”
Once collected, the medications were boxed and transported by Sheriff’s Office personnel directly to the DEA Office in Rochester, where they were weighed and incinerated following Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.
