WELLSVILLE — The Hornell baseball team is still trying to come together as a team after losing several seniors from a successful 2023 campaign.
Sophomore Wyatt Evingham provided the first spark when he helped the Red Raiders win, a 4-1 win over previously undefeated Dansville.
The biggest test of the season came Monday when Hornell went to Wellsville to take on the Lions, the No. 1 seed so far in Class B.
Behind Evingham and the hitting of Charlie Oyer as well as Andrew Davis and Brayden Vaughn, Hornell took a 3-1 lead in the third.
However, some errors and big hits by Wellsville turned the game around.
Wellsville’s Alex Green was a perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate. One that saw two doubles and a fourth inning grand slam come to complete fruition, totaling five RBI in the contest and scoring three runs himself to jet the Lions towards a 15-3 five-inning win over the visiting Red Raiders.
“I’d be afraid to go after Alex because he is smoking hot. He deserves everything that he’s earned here,” Lions coach Tom Delahunt said. “He’s such a hard worker and he’s a really coachable kid. He’s our leader and to see him with the success he’s had so far this year, I couldn’t imagine it happening to a nicer and more hard-working young man. Alex has battled through a lot, and he doesn’t let the setbacks get him down. He does everything he can do to get on that field and play the game he loves to play.”
Before the Lions (13-1) were able to get their pistons firing on all cylinders, they had to work their way from behind after their early 1-0 lead against Hornell evaporated in the top of the third with all three of their runs — two of them incepting from a single by Charlie Oyer to pull the Red Raiders ahead with a 3-1 lead.
But the advantage Hornell was able to garner from Wellsville was short-lived, as the Lions tripled down on their response in the following half of action with a nine-run bonanza, taking a two-run deficit and flipping it upside down on the Red Raiders with a commanding 10-3 lead going to the fourth inning.
In the midst of some dynamic relief efforts staged by Cooper Brockway in the fourth inning, the Lions would syphon that defensive energy and put it to good use to help finish off their win over their longtime rivals, as they posted five more runs — four off the bat of Green, who went yard to deep left center field with his grand slam.
The 15 runs authored by the Lions were recorded off 16 hits at the plate, with Green’s 4-for-4 outing leading the charge.
Following up was Brockway, who had a perfect 3-for-3 himself, driving in three runs and scoring once. Ty Vogel garnered three hits including a double, and scored two runs, while Karson Grover had two hits, also including a double, driving in two and scoring twice himself.

“We crushed the ball tonight and we found all the gaps. They weren’t seeing-eye singles, we had six doubles and a grand slam against Hornell,” said Delahunt. “We’re seeing it really well and putting some great swings together to hit the ball everywhere. That’s through the entire lineup. If one kid doesn’t hit the ball, another one will. It’s really fun to watch all of this take place. The game was still within reach when Hornell took the lead, and when Cooper shut their rally down, we fed off of that in the third.”
On the mound, Brockway put the stamp on the victory in relief with three strikeouts. As for Hornell on the mound, Wyatt Evingham went into the fourth inning during his start, fanning three.

RUSHFORD — The Wolves of Arkport-Canaseraga were able to collect medalist honors from their lead golfer, Sebastian Carroll at the end of their visit to Allegheny Hills in Rushford on Monday.
But when the sun began to go down and the final scores were tallied, a complete balance up and down the card for the host Eagles of Fillmore allowed them to remain undefeated with their fifth straight win, claiming the 180-208 win.
Amidst the even flow of golf for the Eagles (5-0), it was Anderson Wiltsey who came away as the team’s leading scorer, as he punched his ticket towards a team-low round of 43. BASEBALL
Alfred-Almond 5, Andover/Whitesville 4 (F-5)
SCIO — Amidst the pouring rain in Scio on Saturday, Alfred-Almond and Andover/Whitesville rode out the storm in their opening round contest of Scio’s Midseason Tournament until the conditions were no longer playable after five complete innings.
There was even playing ground through the beginning stages between both teams, but an opening was created by Andover/Whitesville going into the fourth, where they would hold the game’s largest lead. But then the Eagles pulled some late magic out of the hat, scoring the final four runs in consecutive fashion to pull ahead with a 5-4 advantage before weather immediately halted play to mark the official end to the contest.
After both teams traded a run across the first inning, followed by a scoreless stand of defense in the next frame, Andover/Whitesville (1-7) went on to score three straight runs to break the deadlock — two of them in the top of the third, set up by a ground-rule double for Colton Calladine with two runners on. Vinny Joyce added to the lead with a sacrifice fly a short time later, plating Calladine.
Alfred-Almond would cut the deficit down to a single run after the fourth inning with a pair of runs, but then diverted their attention to clutch small ball, with Nathan Munson and Brogan Donlan each laying down a bunt to get on base. With the pistons firing, the Eagles posted two go-ahead runs — one of them off an RBI single to take the lead away for good.
Andover/Whitesville would finish with four runs off three hits on offense. On the mound, Colton Calladine went all five innings with six strikeouts and three walks.
Up next, Andover/Whitesville will get set for a 5 p.m. visit to Scio to take on host Friendship/Scio, Tuesday night.

WELLSVILLE/RUSHFORD — The rain halted all but one single event on Wednesday, but over the course of time, the bad weather made its way out of the picture and arriving behind it the following day, was as blue of a sky as you could imagine.
No matter the weather outdoors, the Genesee Valley/Belfast golf squad fought it all in one foul swoop across a 24-hour span to remain undefeated on the season, beginning with a strong 205-226 Wednesday victory over visiting Arkport-Canaseraga at the Wellsville Country Club, completing their season sweep of the Wolves in the rain.
Will Guilford assembled the team’s leading round of the evening, as he posted the leading round of 49 to cement his spot at the top of the Genesee Valley/Belfast scorecard. Right behind him was Chris Weaver, who was a stroke removed from the lead, as he posted a 50. Grant Preston and Sean Mahon each pitched in a 53.

Arkport-Canaseraga was led by the medalist round of 39 shot by Sebastian Carroll.
The next day, Guilford would go on to shoot his second straight team-leading round for Genesee Valley/Belfast, this time garnering medalist honors himself at Allegheny Hills in Rushford, as he recorded a match-low round of 48 to pace the team’s 210-244 win over the host Rebels of Cuba-Rushford on Thursday.
Grant Preston posted a 53 to further Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (6-0) balanced cause behind him. Chris Weaver tallied a 54, while Sean Mahon had a 55 to chip in.
Cuba-Rushford (2-2) was led by Kaden Bell and his team-low round of 52. Sebastian Saulter scored a 57, while Ethan Fries and Coen Kellogg rounded off the scoring with rounds of 67 and 68, respectively. The Rebels will now get set for a 4 p.m. road trip on Tuesday to the Wellsville Country Club to take on the host Lions.
The day before, Genesee Valley/Belfast will make their way back to the Wellsville Country Club themselves, as they host a 4 p.m. Monday tee time with Jasper-Troupsburg.
