Alfred-Almond 8, Andover/Whitesville 4

ANDOVER — The bats were alive and well between Alfred-Almond and Andover/Whitesville on Monday, with both teams converging to produce over 20 hits at the plate.

It was a back-and-forth exchange early on, but after a first inning deadlock was temporarily set in place, the Lady Eagles broke it with six unanswered runs to take the lead away for good, as they moved towards an 8-4 win in Andover.

The two squads came together for a close battle across the first two innings of play, beginning with a Paige Marlatt RBI single to break the ice for the Lady Eagles in their opening at-bats. Andover/Whitesville (3-8) did not let it go unresponsive however, as they fired a punch right back by tying the game at one with a score off some key special teams play.

Following the exchange of a scoreless second inning, the Lady Eagles would foresee an opening to travel through, propelling ahead with a two-run third inning to take the lead, building on it later on in tremendous fashion.

With the Alfred-Almond defense proceeding to keep Andover/Whitesville shut down on offense, the visitors in blue added three massive runs — two off a big double down the left field line from Taylor Flaitz, branching the Lady Eagles lead to 6-1.

After adding another run in the top of the fourth inning, Andover/Whitesville didn’t go down without a middle frame fight, as they brought three runs across on the counterattack in the fifth — two of them off a strong single into the outfield from Lilly Harrington, closing the gap to 7-4 going forward.

But in the end, the Lady Eagles added one last piece of insurance in the sixth inning to further cushion their lead and ultimate victory at the end of the battle.

Andover/Whitesville strung together four runs off nine hits to propel their offense. Leading the efforts were Harrington, Olivia Waters and Reece Winters, all posting two hits. In the circle, Makaila Brewster went all seven innings, handing out five chairs and walking just one.

For Alfred-Almond, the win on the mound belonged to Olivia Flaitz, going the distance with one strikeout and two walks. At the plate, Taylor Flaitz captained the bats with three hits, including a lead-off triple in the sixth inning. Paige Marlatt also had three hits, while Ella Dusinberre and Abby Hurd both had two to chip in.

Andover/Whitesville will look to take aim at a potential season-sweep of Cuba-Rushford tonight, as they prepare for a 5 p.m. visit to take on the Lady Rebels in a quick turnaround.

FILLMORE — Riding high on a big extra inning win over Bolivar-Richburg and a doubleheader sweep of Arkport-Canaseraga late last week, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore were looking to add more fuel to their burning fire approaching the homestretch of the regular season.

Monday night, they would do just that with a ferocious start against Genesee Valley/Belfast, using the bats in full force to ignite a massive 14-2 home victory — their fifth in seven games.

“We were very strong at the plate today,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “It was just one of those days where we were really comfortable in the box. Genesee Valley/Belfast with Hannah (Southwick-Powers) on the mound is a tough team, and today just happened to be our day. We’ve been on both sides of these games. The girls played pretty solid defense and Mylee (Miller) is staying in control and minimizing her mistakes.”

Out of their 14 runs they would scratch across against the Genesee Valley/Belfast defense, Fillmore (8-7) would knock on the door immediately with 11 of those runs coming in the first three innings of play to bring the hammer down with an advantage they would never lose from that point forward, as the offense scoured 15 hits in total, with four different Lady Eagles all recording at least a pair of hits.

Amongst the heavy hitters for the hosts in black and green was Preslee Miller, as she had the biggest bat of them all by going 3-for-5 with a double and five RBI. Mylee Miller chipped in with two hits of her own, including a double, and drove in three more runs. Oakley Frazier had three hits, while Kylee Ellsworth rounded out with two.

In the circle, the win belonged to Mylee Miller, who went all seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks, holding Genesee Valley/Belfast (9-5) to just four hits along the way.=

For the visitors, Hannah Southwick-Powers fanned three and walked two in her two inning start on the mound. At the plate, Jenna Hill and Whitney Young each collected a hit and drove in a run. Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to turn it back around on Thursday with a 5 p.m. visit to Whitesville to battle host Andover/Whitesville.

Fillmore is now off until Wednesday for a 5 p.m. visit to Scio to take on red hot Friendship/Scio.

GOLF

Genesee Valley/Belfast 197, Wellsville 210

WELLSVILLE — For the very first time during Lisa Scott-Schneider’s time as Genesee Valley/Belfast’s head golf coach in the Spring, they put together a season-sweeping performance on the links against the team they share it with — the Lions of Wellsville.

On Monday, that was made possible behind a career-best round from Will Guilford, as he fought past Wellsville’s Ethan Bailey to earn medalist honors in the team’s 197-210 win at the Wellsville Country Club.

“Our team goal is to break 190. We need everyone to buckle down and make some more putts. Will shot his best round ever, so we’re hoping we can build off of that,” said Scott-Schneider. “We have three more regular season matches to go and then the Individual Qualifier coming up next week. The season is quickly coming to a close, so the hope is we can all shoot our best. On the same night, that would be utopia. It’s been a great season so far, and the best for this program in a while. I’m really proud of the team and their accomplishments so far.”

Guilford assembled the pieces to an extraordinary puzzle to lead Genesee Valley/Belfast (9-1) atop of the scorecard, firing a match-low round of 44 to outlast Wellsville’s Ethan Bailey for the top spot.

Following behind was Grant Preston and his round of 49. Sean Mahon chipped in with his score of 51, while Chris Weaver had a 53.

The Lions (8-5) were propelled by Bailey and his team-low round of 45. Fletcher Kaye chipped in with his round of 52. Blake Kalkhof had a 54, while Maddy Parks rounded out with her round of 59.

Both teams will return to the Wellsville Country Club for battle on Wednesday, this time in their own respective matches beginning with 4 p.m. tee times, as Genesee Valley/Belfast plays the role of host against Bolivar-Richburg, while Wellsville welcomes in undefeated Fillmore for battle.

Bolivar-Richburg 215, Cuba-Rushford 240

RUSHFORD — The Rebels of Cuba-Rushford saw Sebastian Saulter take the lead at the top of the scorecard to help start their week off on the right foot, as they squeezed by visiting Bolivar-Richburg at Allegheny Hills with a 215-240 win on Monday.

Saulter paved the way towards winning success for the Rebels (3-4) by firing the match’s lowest round across the nine-hole battle, as he shot the lowest round of 43. Kaden Bell chipped in with his score of 55, while Ethan Fries and Xavier Saulter rounded off with rounds of 57 and 60, respectively.

Bolivar-Richburg (1-6) was led by a team-low round of 53 fired by Cayden Gaines. David Abdo followed with a 59. James Margeson recorded a round of 60, while Zach Mitchell rounded out with his score of 68.
