Spencer comes to Hornell from Pineville Louisiana
From the Hornell Steamers,
The 2024 Hornell Steamers will be led by Blaine Spencer. Spencer, an assistant coach at Louisiana Christian University (LCU), helped lead the Wildcats to a Red River Athletic Conference Championship and a berth in the NAIA Regionals this season.
Spencer played collegiately at Louisiana Christian University as a catcher before becoming a student assistant coach. He transitioned to an assistant coach in January 2023 and is the recruiting coordinator, catching coach, assistant pitching coach, and showcase/camp coordinator.
Other coaching experience includes serving as the owner and director of Team Louisiana Cenla, head coach for Team Louisiana during the summer of 2022, and was an assistant coach last summer for the Baton Rouge Rougarou for part of last summer.
“Blaine has been great to work with,” commented Steamers General Manager Paul Welker. “He brings great energy and I can’t wait for him to get into town. He has worked hard on our roster and has built a nice roster and coaching staff that will represent Hornell well.”
“From my first call with Paul, I was sold on the Hornell Steamers,” recalled Spencer. “What a great honor it is to be the head coach of the Steamers. The baseball history of the town of Hornell dates back to before many of us were able to stay Steamers. I have heard nothing but great things about Hornell and the Steamers fan base.”
This spring, Spencer and the Wildcats were 34-21. They entered the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament as #5 seed and eliminated the #1 seed to advance to the championship round where they defeated the #2 seed to earn the automatic bid to the NAIA Regionals. At the Regionals, LCU went 2-2.
Spencer earned a bachelor degree in exercise science from Louisiana Christian and is currently working on his master’s degree in sports administration from Arkansas State. On top of his coaching duties, Spencer is a special education teacher in the Rapides Parish School District.
The Steamers will report to town the first couple of days of June and will open the season at Maple City Park on June 6 at 7 p.m. vs. the Horseheads Hitmen.
“I am stoked to take the field with my team on June 6. The roster that I have put together is eager to put on a show. I am excited to get started and to bring some Louisiana spice to Hornell this summer.”
