Steamers down Hitmen 7/15/2024
The Hornell Steamers won their 24th game of the season, eleventh in a row, 13-2 over the Horseheads Hitmen in an early contest at Williams Colucci Field. Hornell is now 24-7-1 on the season.
Elijah Nichols (Arkansas State) didn’t want much time as he drove the second pitch of the game over the fence. Two batters later, Alex Dupuy (LSU Eunice) scored on a throwing error after stealing third base.
Nichols repeated his first at-bat in the 3rd inning with another solo homer on the first pitch he saw. A couple batters later, Braden McLin (Louisiana Christian) delivered a two-out RBI double to make it 4-0.
The Hitmen scored their lone runs of the game in the 4th. Logan Meisner and Jack Carozzoni collected RBI singles.
Hornell put the game out of reach with a big 5th inning. McLin collected his second RBI double, Markus Brehm (Finger Lakes CC) and Nicolas Schwing (Holmes JC) hit back-to-back RBI singles, and Finn Ellis (U of Charleston) hit a three-run homer. Nichols kept his hot day going with a RBI single and Jackson Legg (LSU Eunice) capped the eight run inning with a RBI double.
Ellis capped the scoring in the 6th when he drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch.
Jeremy Yanow (Webster) was solid on the mound. He allowed two runs on six hits in six innings of work to earn the victory. He walked three and struck out six. Logan Hoyt (Alfred State) got the final three outs of the contest.
Nichols led the Steamers 11-hit attack with a 3 for 5 day while McLin was 2 for 4.
Hornell hosts Genesee on Tuesday night at Maple City Park at 7 p.m. The game is a key match-up as the Steamers and Rapids are battling each other for the top spot in the Western Division. Hornell currently has a three point lead with four games remaining in the regular season. Genesee has five games left on their schedule.
Steamers defeat Dansville in the rain 7/14/24
The Hornell Steamers defeated the Dansville Gliders 6-3 in a rainy Sunday afternoon contest at Babcock Park. Hornell has won ten straight and are now 23-7-1 on the year.
Rustin Pope (Coastal Alabama North CC) got the Steamers on the board in the 2nd when he collected a RBI double. He came around to score on a throwing error to make it 2-0. Jackson Legg (LSU Eunice) drew a bases loaded walk to cap the inning.
Ty Kenney (Houghton) hit a hard hit grounder to plate a run in the 3rd to make it 4-0.
The game remained 4-0 until the 6th when the Gliders got on the board when Cooper Berry collected a RBI single.
In the 7th, Hornell took advantage of three walks to load the bases and Legg scored on a wild pitch and Braden McLin (Louisiana Christian) scored on a throwing error.
Cale Cochran scored on a throwing error in the 7th and Aidan Diltz hit a RBI double in the 8th to cut it to 6-3 but Dansville didn’t get any closer.
Wes Carter (Webster) picked up the win with six innings of four hit pitching. He allowed just one run while walking one and striking out three. Danik Reed (Nunez CC) allowed an unearned run in the 7th while Eli Fuselier (Nunez CC) struck out three in the final two innings.
Pope was 2 for 3 with a RBI while Logan Hoyt (Alfred State) was 2 for 4.
Hornell travels to Horseheads on Monday for a 10:30 a.m. first pitch versus the Hitmen.
