Read more about a very busy month at the SCSO
From Sheriff James Allard,
It’s a beautiful day in Steuben County. We have had our most bountiful jail garden and working with our food service partners, Trinity Services Group, we have had some of the most nutritious meals ever served to our guests in the jail. We have also been able to provide food to some in our community who are not food secure. It is a win-win for our inmate workers.
Undersheriff McNelis was busy in July. Not only did he secure a technology grant for over $600,000 to benefit Steuben County law enforcement, he also applied for and received a second $600,000 grant from NYS to provide a central records management system for all Steuben County law enforcement. Kudos to Undersheriff McNelis! Our twelve campers visited the Sheriff’s Summer Camp in July, having a terrific and educational time. At the NYS Sheriff’s Conference, we discussed a fitting tribute to recognize the 32-year term and fifty-year career of Sheriff Ron Spike, of Yates County. We discussed creating a wellness facility to complement the Sheriff’s Summer Camp and have embarked on a campaign to build it.
We were fortunate to conduct a swearing-in of three new members and one promotion to our Office in July. We welcomed Deputy Nate Donahue, a Marine Corps veteran and police officer from the Hornell City Police Department. We also welcomed two new Correction Officers, Officer Beyea and Officer Burdick, to the team. Finally, we swore in Corrections Lieutenant Ryan Thompson who had been promoted from Sergeant. Congratulations all!
At the Sheriff’s Office, your public servants were busy again. Our Corrections Division was still busy conducting the Basic Course in Corrections for our part-time and full-time Officers. Investigator Brown, Investigator Martin, Investigator Payne, Investigator Ellison, Sergeant Towner, Sergeant Sorge, Sergeant Hawk and Sergeant Fanzo renewed their EMT certifications. Deputy Saltsman, Deputy Bush and Deputy G. Harrison successfully completed Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) training. Sheriff Allard presented at the Keuka Lake Association annual meeting with Yates County Sheriff Ryan. Sheriff Allard also attended the NYS Sheriff’s Conference, receiving instruction from the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of DCJS regarding trends in crimes and enforcement, instruction on the advantages of a nutritional diet for incarcerated individuals, physical therapy for wellness, information from the Governors Traffic Safety Council, and other important topics.
July was another busy and challenging month in the Sheriff’s Office. Our investigators and deputies were tasked with one criminal impersonation investigation, two death investigations, one possession of a weapon investigation, three burglary investigations, one menacing investigation, four criminal contempt investigations, one possession of stolen property investigation, one unauthorized use of a vehicle investigation, one tampering with evidence investigation, one tampering with a witness investigation, three fire investigations, ten larceny investigations, eight grand larceny investigations, thirteen harassment investigations, one sex abuse investigation, one criminal mischief investigation, three narcotics investigations, one welfare fraud investigation, two trespass investigations and two misuse of foodstamps investigations. Our Patrol Division was tasked with multiple domestic incident investigations along with mental health detainments, emergency medical aid, assisting other agencies, serving of warrants, and five intoxicated or impaired driving arrests.
All of our deputies and officers performed in an outstanding fashion, and we received multiple commendations from the public regarding their outstanding performance.
We continue to pray for our first responder colleagues and deployed military across the globe, as well as their families. We also pray for the victims of mass casualty events and state sponsored aggression.
Thank you for supporting the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in these challenging times and stay safe!
