The City of Hornell is proud to announce that three firefighters from the Hornell Fire Department have advanced their education, training, and skills through their completion of paramedic school. Firefighters Shaymis Quinlan, Mark Joy, and Nick Plank have successfully completed the rigorous paramedic program at Monroe Community College. All three excelled throughout the program, carrying high marks and demonstrating strong clinical performances.

Chief Frank Brzozowski highlighted their achievement, stating, “All of our firefighters are trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), capable of performing Basic Life Support (BLS) services. Our department also provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) services, which requires the expertise of a paramedic. A paramedic will run an ALS call, which demands critical care and intensive decision-making. We are really proud of Shaymis, Mark, and Nick for their dedication in improving their training to provide a higher level of care to the residents of the Canisteo Valley. I know they will do great work in their new roles.”

Joy, Plank, and Quinlan have completed their final and board examinations at Monroe Community College and will soon be eligible to sit for the New York State Paramedic Board Exam. Upon passing the  state board exam, the number of paramedics in the department will increase to 14.

Mayor John Buckley shared his thoughts, “I would like to congratulate Shaymis, Mark, and Nick for their dedication to furthering their education and completing paramedic school, all while continuing to serve our community as firefighters. The City of Hornell is committed to investing in our greatest asset: our people. By supporting their educational advancements, we benefit not only our community, but also the surrounding areas.”

As these three firefighters prepare to step into their new roles as paramedics, the City of Hornell looks forward to the level of service they will bring. Congratulations and thank you to Shaymis, Mark, and Nick for completing paramedic school and your ongoing commitment to public safety!
