Mabel Ann McCormick, 83, formerly of Andover, passed away on Thursday (September 26, 2024) at Wellsville Manor Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. McCormick was born on January 24, 1941 in Andover to Charles F. and Gertrude F. (Perry) Halsey. She attended Andover Central School and later earned her GED.

Mabel began her career in food service as a cafeteria worker for Alfred State College and a cook for Delta Sigma Phi. Later, she became a baker for Bell’s Grocery Store in Wellsville before finishing her career at Greenwood Central School, retiring around 2004.

Mabel is survived by two sons, Mark McCormick of Whitesville and Andy (Sheila) Knight of Addison; four daughters, Catherine Dimino of Andover, Kelly Waldie of Gun Barrel City, Tex., Lisa (Kevin) Murphy of Rochester and Danielle (Scott) Lashbrook of Panama City Beach, Fla.; a sister Nora Gill of Tenn.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Terry McCormick; her long-time companion, Jack Knight; a brother, Clarence Halsey; a daughter-in-law, LouCindy McCormick; and a son-in-law, Kerry Waldie

Mabel loved to cook and was famous for her sticky buns. Cooking Christmas and Thanksgiving dinners for her family was a major highlight of her year. She was often called upon to cook for charitable fundraisers such as the Andover United Methodist Church and the Andover Lions Club.

From the vantage point of her children, Mabel’s proudest accomplishment was the raising of her four children as a single mom and preparing them for future life challenges. Her daughter Catherine attributes her work ethic to her hard-working mom and son Mark remembers the encouragement of receiving cookies in a care package while serving in the military. Favorite memories from her children’s growing up years were the trips to Stony Brook State Park in Dansville and Roseland Park in Canandaigua.

Mabel had a life-long love for dogs, in particular, Genny was a favorite. She attended the Andover United Methodist Church and served as Andover Town Historian.

There will be no prior visitation. A Celebration of Live will be held at a date to be determined. Arrangements are under the direction of Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Andover. Online condolences may be offered at www.baker-swan.com.
