WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23) announced that the Steuben County Industrial Development Agency has been awarded $15,982,500 in federal funding to upgrade aging rail engines with modern technology at Alstom’s Kanona facility in Bath, New York. This grant will be used to repower two existing locomotives with advanced engine technology, meeting modern standards for performance and efficiency.

“This $16 million project represents a significant investment in the future of Steuben County and the Southern Tier,” said Congressman Langworthy. “By upgrading outdated rail technology with advanced systems, we are enhancing our infrastructure while creating good-paying jobs that will strengthen our local economy. As an advocate for the hardworking people of this region, I’m committed to ensuring that we continue to attract projects that bolster U.S. manufacturing and welcome opportunities for continued growth.”

Specifically, this grant will fund the repowering of two older, less efficient locomotives with new diesel engines and battery technology, including regenerative braking to recharge the batteries, improving both performance and efficiency. These upgrades will reduce emissions, cut operating costs, and extend the service life of the locomotives. Norfolk Southern Railway is also contributing 25% of the total project cost.

This grant is part of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program, which aims to enhance the safety, efficiency, and reliability of rail infrastructure across the country.

Congressman Nick Langworthy represents the 23rd Congressional District of New York, including Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties, as well as parts of Erie County. Visit langworthy.house.gov.
