Coach Scholes: We continue to grow

Final score: Hornell – 45, Corning – 57

From Hornell High School Athletics,

The Hornell Red Raiders opened their season Saturday night at the Way-Co Hall of Fame Showcase with a repeat match-up with AAA Corning Hawks. Last year, the Red Raiders came out on top of a hard-fought match-up. The Hawks found redemption tonight with a 57-45 win over the B1 Red Raiders.

Corning’s Nolan Proudfoot led all scorers with 26 points in the win. Kyler Stevenson added 14 points for the Hawks.

Hornell senior,  Austyn Gollnitz, led the Raiders with 15 points on the night.  Senior PJ Picco had a double-double, adding 11 points and 11 rebounds for Hornell. Marco Picco added 9 points.

“Overall, I think we will learn a lot from tonight’s game,” commented Hornell coach Kirk Scholes.  “The reason we schedule this game is to measure ourselves against a good team.  When we look back at the tape I think we will see a lot of good, but also a lot of correctable mistakes.”

“The part I liked the most is that we competed,” continued Scholes.  “We have to continue to grow at the offensive end.   Austyn Gollnitz scored 15 and it was a good start for him.  He has to give us an inside presence.  PJ Picco did a good job with a double double.  He will get back to his more natural position next week.  I thought Demayne Dixon really competed defensively.

“We have work to do if we want to play with the good teams.  The kids will work to get better and we’ll get there.”

The Red Raiders will travel to LeRoy to take on the Oatkan Knights next Wednesday night.
