Price per gallon headscratcher: Bath NY is $2.99 and Hornell is $3.39

By Andrew Harris

Gas prices are in the headlines today as prices have fallen across the region. Using the handy search tool, Gasbuddy.com, prices are as low as $2.92/gallon in Elmira NY. According to that same site, the average in NYS is $3.12 per gallon with some stations selling as low as $2.42/gallon.

Our readers have long wondered, “why is gas so much more in Hornell?”

Is it proximity to main transportation routes? No, Bath, Elmira, and Hornell gas stations all sit on Interstate 86, Hornell also has state route 36 and 21 running through the city.

Are the taxes on gas higher in Hornell? No, we have asked local officials and they have no special local gas tax that would impact prices.

Sales volume could be considered but between Hornell, Arkport, and Canisteo the population is about triple that of nearby Wellsville which has an average price of $3.25/gallon. It stands to reason that daily traffic data traveling through Hornell is even greater, negating any question about volume effecting price.

If the reason behind the price disparity isn’t taxes, or volume, or location…. then what explains the price difference between the Hornell area and the rest of the region?
