You could forgive the Hornell girls’ basketball team if they came out of the blocks with a slow start. Senior Lillian Hoyt has a major injury that took place just before the season opened.

Yet the Red Raiders beat a tough Corning/Painted Post team, 69-43, downed Watkins Glen, 56-31 and on Monday night, beat a talented Keshequa squad, 55-52.

Hornell coach Jim Dagon was able to work with Corning/Painted Post to allow Lillian Hoyt to start the game scoring 10 points and she has 1,000 for her career.

“Thank you to the Corning/ Painted Post program for allowing Lillian Hoyt to score her 1,000th career point to begin the game.,” Dagon said. “We are all very appreciative of this, as Lillian tore her ACL last week in practice and will be having season-ending surgery on the 18th.”

Here are the game results and comments from Coach Dagon:

Hornell 55 – 52 Keshequa

Selena Maldonado – 14 points, 8 Rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals

Jordyn Dyring – 14 points, 2 steals

Payton Bentley – 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals

Raegan Evingham – 11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists

Mia Nasca – 4 steals, 4 rebounds, 2 assists

Coach Dagon: Keshequa made life very tough for us in the 4th quarter. They clawed their way back from down 15 and made it a one possession game down the stretch. Our girls came up with some big shots and big stops that helped us hold on to the win.

Hornell 56 – 31 Watkins Glen

Leading scorer – Jordyn Dyring (game high) – 24 points (4 threes), 3 steals, 2 rebounds

Raegan Evingham – 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals

Payton Bentley – 9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals

Selena Maldonado- 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals

Coach Dagon: Both teams played great defense which made it hard for either to get into a rhythm offensively. It was a highly competitive, grind it out type of game, so I was very glad to see us come away with a win. Jordyn was outstanding for us tonight. She scored from every level and set the tone for us defensively by constantly pressuring the ball and diving on the floor for every loose ball.

Hornell 69 – 43 Corning/ P.P.

Leading scorer – Jordyn Dyring 16 points, 7 rebounds (4 three pointers)

Selena Maldonado – Triple Double – 11 points, 10 steals, 13 rebounds, 6 assists

Raegan Evingham – 12 points, 7 steals

Payton Bentley – 8 points, 6 rebounds

Mia Nasca – 6 points, 5 assists
