January Newsletter from the Steuben County Sheriff James Allard
It’s a beautiful day in Steuben County. The hills are covered in snow, and it feels like winter is here for a while. I hope that everyone had a safe and happy holiday season! Now, moving ahead into 2025 I look forward to serving another term as your Sheriff, and continuing to work with the real-life heroes that serve our county as Deputies and Officers of the Sheriff’s Office.

December brought another busy month for our agency. On December 7th we conducted the “Toys for Tots”, and Coats for Kids fill the patrol car event at the Erwin Walmart Plaza. Hundreds of toys were donated and about 80 coats were received to benefit those in our county who need them most. We have already sent coats to children in need at BOCES and look forward to helping all our school districts. On December 14th we participated in the regional “Shop with a Cop” at the Hornell Walmart, teaming up with multiple agencies and serving over 60 families. The Christmas Spirit was everywhere and a HUGE thank you to the Walmart teams and Santa Clause for appearing for “Shop with a Cop”!
Also, in December, Both K9 Tripp and K9 Twiggy had birthdays, Happy Birthday!

Sergeant Sorge and Deputy Butler taught another NYS Boater’s Safety Course, continuing our monthly presentation of this course. Deputy Butler completed the fourth and final section of the Crash Reconstruction course. Jail staff completed the CPR/first aid refresher course and the Defensive Tactics refresher for Corrections. Officers Manley, Eighmey and Parsons attended ALERRT 1 and ALLERT 2. Captain Mills, Lieutenant Kennedy, Lieutenant Wetherby and Sergeant Day completed the FBI LEEDA Command Leadership Institute. Captain Mills completed the FBI LEEDA Internal Affairs Investigations Course.
December was another busy and challenging month in the Sheriff’s Office. Our investigators and deputies were tasked with one fugitive from justice investigation, four burglary investigations, one unlawful imprisonment investigation, three endangering a child investigations, three assault investigations, one jail contraband investigation, one criminal possession of a weapon investigation, one sex offense investigation, one rape investigation, six death investigations, one possession of stolen property investigation, one dangerous dog investigation, two menacing investigations, two reckless endangerment investigations, five criminal contempt investigations, two welfare fraud investigations, two trespass investigations, two obstructing breathing investigations, three fire investigations, six larceny investigations, one grand larceny investigation, nine harassment investigations, eight criminal mischief investigations, six narcotics investigations, one tampering with evidence investigation and one resisting arrest investigation. Our Patrol Division was tasked with multiple domestic incident investigations along with mental health detainments, emergency medical aid, assisting other agencies, serving of warrants, and six intoxicated or impaired driving arrests.
All of our deputies and officers performed in an outstanding fashion, and we received multiple commendations from the public regarding their outstanding performance.
We continue to pray for our first responder colleagues and deployed military across the globe, as well as their families. We also pray for the victims of mass casualty events and state sponsored aggression.
Thank you for supporting the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office in these challenging times and stay safe!
