Stay back, stay safe, and save lives!

From the Steuben County Public Works Department,

With winter in full swing and the roads getting slick, it’s time for a friendly reminder to keep your distance from snowplows. These hardworking crews are out there day and night, battling the elements to keep our roads safe. They’re not just clearing snow; they’re saving lives!

Here’s why it’s important to stay back:

❄️ Limited Visibility: Plow operators have large blind spots. If you’re too close, they may not see you.

❄️ Flying Debris: Snow, ice, and even rocks can fly up from the plow blade.

❄️ Wide Turns: Plows are heavy and make wide, unpredictable movements to clear roads efficiently.

❄️ Salt Spreaders: Following too closely can damage your vehicle and make driving more hazardous.

🔑 The Rule of Thumb: If you can’t see the mirrors of the plow, the driver can’t see you!

Let’s all do our part to make sure everyone gets home safely this winter. Respect the plow, give them room to work, and slow down when you see one on the road. Together, we can keep our community safe during these icy months!

Drive safe and stay warm, friends.
